[PEER REVIEWED ARTICLE] Extra Ordinary Performances at the Salk Institure for Biological Studies

This article presents an account of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in terms of its untold performance. While the tactics and systems of the building are well acknowledged in extant accounts, the actual performativity of the building and its systems remains undocumented. The research for this article is based upon extended in-situ observation during work in the Facility Services department of the Institute. This article presents the latent, day-to-day performance of the building as well as the cumulative evidence of its performance over its 40 year history. Contrary to accounts of the building that focus on the extraordinary qualities of the building, in the end often the most mundane details in this building engender its most consequential performances.
