As part of the 2008 national convention of the American Institute of Architects, this outdoor installation is a prototype installation for vertical urban gardens suspended from Boston’s multiple brick parti walls. Merging the disciplines of public art and sustainable prototyping, the five-story-high planted structure is both experimental and educational in purpose, contributing to the visual and environmental fabric of the city.
Suspended from the newly converted loft building in Boston's South End, a metal cable system supports hanging fabric panels of varying dimensions planted with a living sedum mat. The investigation tested the performance of various systems and plant types: Test growths include panels of chia, annual rye and sedum.
The projects was done as a collaboration effort of 10 emergent local architecture firms, sponsored by the LEF Foundation and the Boston Society of Architects.
